There could be a number of reasons...
- Resonance during the cut causing vibration
- A chipped insert
- The bed may not be level and so your depth of cut is changing over the length of the piece
- The end is not supported and the job is flexing away from the cutter
- Your tool post or holder has loosened during the cut causing an inconsistent finish
- There may be too much overhang of the tool and a combination of factors causing vibration
- A lack of cutting fluid
- If the feed is powered by a leadscrew it could be a worn leadscrew increasing the spacing between the peaks
