Collets

What Brino said.

My choice was ER32 collets. I bought a budget R8 set because my lathe chucks do not hold small diameters (1/2'' or less) very well. A MT5 to MT3 soft sleeve was bored to receive the R8 chuck.

I also made my own D1-4 collet chuck so that longer stock could be held through the spindle.

What taper does your spindle have?

Not sure what taper is on the spindle, and how would I find this information out!? Again, I am new to all this. Someone gave me this machine (Logan 825 9" lathe).

(....and Beall Tool has that size available)

Of course you could also make your own collet adaptor. A number of people here have.
I will post back with links if I can find them.

My Beall ER-32 system allows me to have a bar up to 3/4" thru the spindle (limited by the Southbend spindle).

EDIT: also see page 15 (or pdf page 17 of 82) of the same manual for more collet related stuff.

The ER collet system is designed for tool holding. That said it is a good choice for work holding in a home hobby shop for small work, and softer materials. It would be a poor choice for production work. I use ER 40 for larger capacity.

Thank you! I will also be in the market for a QCTP. Any suggestions?
