Clamping Aluminium Plate

To avoid scratching the plate you need something that is softer than the AL plate. Stir sticks, popsicle sticks, plastic strips, are a few options.
Aluminum strips are the same hardness ans what you are trying to protect, the can and plate will dent equally.

This is the one I went with in the end as I had the tape on hand, you were right, absolutly rock solid for the operation I had to do, thanks to all for the replys
