Remember, WD 40 is not a lubricant per say. The name says it all, W = water, D = displacer, 40 = they got the formula right on the 40th try. WD 40 can be used for many things including cleaning your hands but it was meant for one purpose, to displace Water.

Pick up a can of motorcycle chain lube it is in a spray can and is good stuff.

Chain lubes, either for bicycle or motorcycle chain, are usually formulated to penetrate then thicken to stay put.
My suggestion for storage of your chuck would be a bicycle chain lube available in a small squeeze bottle from Walmart.
