Another edit , just saw the pic of the lathe .................................................schweeeeeeeeeeeeeet !

In the pic , are you turning that shaft without the live center ??????

Aside from the fully agreed "schweeeeeeeeeeeeeet !", the other great phrase I take from this is "Barbie starter set from China"!
.. and yes, The rod cries out to have a centre spot drill put up it's free end, and then be offered some support from a centre in the tailstock.

Have you checked spindle movement?
End play and radial?

Just weld a short rod to the back of the tool to contact the back side of the spindle. View attachment 384079
