Have a question about bending L brackets.
I have some 1/8" x 1 1/2" HR flat bar stock that is too flimsy for the brackets I have to bend up at 90 Deg. The shelf brackets are going to be about 10" x 10" Max. (L shape)
Two brackets need not hold more than 150 lbs. total. Should I go with HR 1/4" thickness or go with Cold rolled 1/4" thickness. Also should heat be applied to either? Thanks, Al

HR 1/4" will work. I assume you plan on adding a diagonal brace. You should have no trouble bending it cold but heat will make it easier. If heating take to a bright red if possible.

I bend flat stock in a blacksmith's leg vise but you could do it in a bench vise. If a sharp bend is desired, use a hammer to work the bend while the initial bend is made.

Did not plan on a diagonal brace. I would like to bend up similar to photo.

I wouldn't expect to bend 1/4 x 1 1/2 cold unless you're using a press brake in a hydraulic press. Bending 1/4 x 5/8 stainless cold took perhaps 5t in my press.

Yep, I think your right about 1/8" x 10" bracket. I purchased some 3/16" and 1/4" thickness. Some brackets may be 10" depth. Some brackets will be less. I will use metal thicknesses as per depth of bracket. The weight on shelves will be a lot less than 150. I will use a HF bench bender. It should work on the 1/4" thickness, If not I will heat metal. Thanks, Al. I will take photos of finish product. May not be for a few weeks.

All bar stock is HR. as so I can bend 90 deg. without snapping metal.

Ok, The brackets are complete. I used 1/4" HR. A H/F Bender was used with an extension handle. One shelf up so far. (My daughter in law's barber shop.) Here are some pics.

Those bends look very crisp. Almost like a press brake would do. What was the setup on your bender to get that?
