Anyone know if this tool post would work on a Jet 1440A?

ah ok. The way it was worded I thought you were considering going from an axa to a bxa.

I would go to a bxa myself. It will give you the adjustablilty and should be the right hight for a 14" lathe. Can you get a measurement from the top of the compound without the tool post to the center line of the spindle??

I was going to do that last night and forgot. I'm considering just using my mill to fit the tools to the current tool post.
 
I had a BXA on my 13" Metosa. It is now on my 16" Nardini. It should work just fine on your 14".
