About this tool grinder...

Bought it for his asking price of $120 - doesn't help when another potential buyer was already there! Was only able to jump on it because I have the week off. Normally, all the good deals go to retired guys mid-week...

The green wheel is worn but usable, though that side is missing its retaining nut. The diamond wheel was in pretty poor shape, and surprisingly, also wobbles a bit and should probably be replaced. Where should I be looking for replacement wheels?
Nice score! $120 is a deal!

I like the AlOx wheels from CGW, about $50 each https://www.travers.com/plate-mounted-wheels/p/105572/

You can find them on eBay or Amazon a little cheaper sometimes.

I see that the retaining nuts are 5/8-12 Acme thread, and aren't carried by McMaster. Apparently some table saw uses that size, so they're around, though not common. Would consider cutting my own threads but need... wait for it... a tool grinder to make a HSS thread tool, haha.

:D well, you will have 1 wheel that works at least! You could grind a tool with that.

Otherwise, I see amazon has a few of the arbor nuts(looks like the PM66 used it, so it super common!).

Hmm, what search phrase are you using to find them? I can't find anything in 5/8-12 Acme, on eBay at least. I just realized that you wrote Amazon,.oy.

I preface this with: It'll be used primarily to grind HSS lathe tools, and not carbide (unless the wheels can do both).

---

Based upon what was mounted on the grinder, it looks like it uses a recessed diamond wheel, like this one, https://www.mcmaster.com/4571A143-4571A62/. On the other side is a green recessed wheel, like this one, https://www.mcmaster.com/4468A21/

I'm asking because I don't want to get fooled into buying an expensive wheel that's not intended for my use. I'm asking in part because the guy claimed that he never used it, and got it as payment for money owed, so who knows its back story.

Lastly, I see that the green wheels are described as "...For non-ferrous metals such as cemented materials..." Does that mean no HSS?

BTW, I am actively trying to research this myself, and not just sitting on my hands wanting to be spoon-fed :)

See the white wheels I linked above on travers, it should be the 4 bolt plate mounts if it is like the baldor and other clones.

How can you tell that the Grizzly part is Acme thread?

On wheels, don't try to replace what was on the machine as found. Put the wheels on that are the most suitable for what you intend to grind.
