After spending some down time in TX airports from the storms I was forced to look at art. Two pieces caught my eye and gave me an idea for my mistakes and projects gone wrong . At 500 a piece I might break even.

I'd hate to see my reception at home if I brought that "art" home and told the wife I spent $1000. On second hand, maybe it's a good strategy; get her something for hanging on the wall. Then maybe buying a new 8" 3-jaw chuck for my lathe would look like a bargain!

I used my non-contact tachometer to measure the six speeds of my Logan 850 lathe, then labeled the headstock cover with those speeds, and clear coated the labels so I can clean up without erasing them.

Ha! I just noticed you can see in the background the black band around the chuck that I colored with a Sharpie to give better contrast for the sensor (it uses a little strip of self-adhesive reflective vinyl to measure the RPMs; did fine with just the sticker until I got down to the two slowest speeds and then it got confused until I added the ink).

All speeds are rounded to the nearest 5, measured with power feed gears engaged (didn't make much difference).

In response, I did take some photos showing my Mitutoyo DTI set up with my 1" mike standard, then with each of the allegedly 1" blocks, plus one that kind of showed two blocks screwed together, and how the off-square hole was causing a gap opposite where they were in firm contact.

Long story short, Shars/Discount Machine did send me a refund today, and told me I could keep the offending set. So I'm OK with the whole deal. Now my only question is, what to do with a set of 36 out-of-spec round space blocks. Any suggestions would be more than welcome!

Depending on how valuable you time you could hand lap each one, until they are perfect.

Yes, Yes, I could have bought one from HF for $34 but where is the fun in that. I spent $27 for the magnets but I have one left over to play with.
The magnets are 6" X 4" and they are epoxied into the lift lid. The frame is made of wood and the bottom cover is aluminum held on with brass screws. Maybe the chips won't stick to things they aren't supposed to.

It even fits under the bench and cabinets.
Place over the trash can and lift the lid to empty.

Enjoy

Fantastic idea and execution!
Now you need to mount one or two of the free HF LED flashlights on top, and maybe a mirror placed at a 45 degree angle, so you can find those EDBD screws and nuts that fell to the floor and skittered under the work bench!
