Wood Prototyping or Model Making

Sugar pine is a western costal wood, relatively soft, close grain with little or no prominent grain, it is or was used for moldings, it is getting a bit hard to find, but I'm working with a quantity that I bought many years ago.
Sweet, a stockpile of aged & dried material.
Yeah, I went straight to wikipedia and saw the map for the area where it grows. Very limited.

Pine would be used for patterns that would be used in low production quantity, mahogany for patterns subject to higher use/abuse, and finally metal, usually aluminum for production work. I see larger patterns being made of thick plywood now and the use of two part plastic castable
stuff for pattern work, especially for core box work, I have used it for years, it makes core box work quite easy compared to built up wood.
