What would you think this thread is UNC or whitworth?

looking at the less disturbed threads on the right side,
there appears to be a round bottom to the threads, screaming whitworth

3 to 1 for Whitworth. I will admit defeat. Mind you I don’t like it one bit. Just like having discussions with my wife. She is ALWAYS right. For I am an Idiot. Happy idiot mind you

To make it worse, I've found that most new replacement Whitworth come from India and often don't have the rounded feature- and can be undersized enough to fit UNC nuts. There may be better sources in the UK but what you can buy here in US is hit or miss. Dave

At this point why not just buy a length of grade 8 all-thread then you can tap the new handle 5/8-11 UNC. Then chase out the T-nut and add a bit of JB weld to make a solid fit. They do sell longer and shorter lengths.

Chasing out the nut goes the wrong way as the fit is all ready loose. If you are rehabbing a Whitworth machine, it is worthwhile to buy a set of taps and dies from India. I'm not a huge fan of stuff from India but the tap and die sets are pretty cheap and serve their purpose. If you have a thread cutting insert for your lathe, you can also buy 55 degree Whitworth inserts. BSF and BA threads are totally different so they can't be easily changed except for a few random sizes. I think BA have a 47.5 degree thread or close. They are often used for small screws on English machines. You might find those on your Colchester too. Dave

I have both tap and die for 5/8 BSW, if you are interested, PM me.

I also have a large number of other British taps and dies if anyone else may be interested, most are British manufacture.

I'd be particularly interested in BSF and BA. Dave

I have a good bit of both, I'll get a picture and can e mail it to you; PM me with your e mail address.

I got them out of the drawer unit, there are 61 taps and 26 dies in BSF, and more tapa and dies in BA that I got tired of counting, hope to get pictures later today.
