In fact, that is how foundries checked their alloys of iron to determine if they were compatible with the castings they intended to pour, by pouring test wedges and fracturing them where the white started and measuring the thickness of the section at that point; if it was white at a thickness larger than the casting run, there had to be additions made to the iron so chilling would not be a problem.
