What tooling do I need to get started with a lathe

Frank, the reason the guys are suggesting using the biggest tools you QCTP will hold is that you want the most rigidity you can get, to ensure the smoothest finish. I have run into some HSS tooling that is a bit too big to fit. It was typically the unground ones that didn't fit. If you get the shiny ground bits, you should have no trouble.

I have G0602. Don't buy 1/2" carbide tool holder's or hss blanks, they will fit in the 4 way tool holder that comes with lathe but will be too high for QCTP. 3/8" tools will be fine. You will also need live center, drill chuck, boring bars. Get/make some kind of chip shield while it is not necessary but very convenient and will save you a lot of sweeping.

Yes, rigidity is the reason I suggested going with the biggest that will fit - but if that makes it sit too high then 3/8 is the way to go. That's why this forum helps - you can get the inside scoop from someone with the same equipment. What about the cutoff bits? (Those skinny flat ones). Is there a max height that fits in the AXA holder?

Thanks, lots of good information. I think it is time to start using that credit card LOL. I am designing a 5 drawer cart to put the lathe on, but it is still to cold out to work on it plus I need to get the trailer out to get the 24 foot pc's of square tubing and sheet steel. Thanks again for all the good info. Frank

I have cheap Shars tool post and holders. The cut off one (#250-107) uses 1/2"x1/16" tool bits.
