The Compact 8 did not have a chip guard. In truth, most of us prefer not to use one but it does enhance safety and keeps excess oil from a freshly serviced chuck from making the well known stripe on your favorite T-shirt. Steve Bedair made one for his 9 X 20 lathe here:

On lathes with chip guards as standard, the shaft of the guard triggers a switch that prevents the lathe from turning on unless the guard is lowered into position. You'll have to figure out how to wire that if you prefer to have this function.
