What is this???

I think that is a holder for the attached buttons.

They are for marking or measuring features.

You drill a hole at certian spot, tap for screw size and attach.

The buttons are say 1/2 diameter.

You can reference the edges for other spots.

Just my guess...

They can also be used as a filing guide for hand filing radii. Blondihacks did a video about them.

You drill and tap a hole for the screw they are retained with so there is room to move them around a bit to dial them in to zero.

I just found some videos on using these. Seems like a lot of work to drill and tap a hole to make a measurement and not much benefit to using these. I can use other methods to locate a part. I would find these useless. Has anyone found an occasion where this was the best (or only) solution? Please describe?

I believe there were used much more in the 1800’s. Before we had all these better measurement taking devices, and DRO’S.

I had an old book that was describing how to use them and to very accurately do a layout and then use them to center on them when setting up a mill or lathe work.

Can really be helpful when drilling a larger plate than what you can move in one setup on a mill, and have to unclamp the work and shift it on the table.

But honestly, how often do we need to have holes accurate to .010” when we are talking about doing something that big.
