What Did You Buy Today?

OK, so I purchased a week ago, but they did arrive today. Every once in a while I'll check out the clearance stuff listed in the Taylor Toolworks emails I get, and I found some goodies this time:

The "Scratch & Dent" parallels were because the box was a little beat up and the latch didn't work (gee, just like the full price ones you get for almost twice the money); nothing wrong with the parallels. The only blemish I found on the scale was where they lightly ground the "PEC" off one side, which they tell you about in the description (a mark about 3/32" x 1/4", above and just to the left of the "8" [or below & to the left of the upside-down "16"]). And the 60µ, 80µ & 100µ lapping film sheets were on clearance at 83% off (now only 38% off).

Another scroll chuck. Can't have too many.

I've been making reproduction decorative finials for antique clocks. Now I can make multiple parts before changing tool positions. My form tools have different shapes ground on each end.

I've been keeping track of tools I could have used, and I finally bought some of them. Almost all of this is from KBC except for the DeWalt.

I already have a pin gage set from .061" to .250", but it's amazing how often it turns out I'll need a bigger pin. Got this .250" to .500" "KBC" brand (actual brand is mhc) set to fix that. I deal with a lot of ⅜" holes, so this will be handy. No idea where to store it though! It's huge and heavy.

I've always wanted one of these Starrett combination squares and center finders, but I could never justify the cost. I honestly still can't justify it, but I've bought most of the cheaper stuff I could justify. Oh well. It's nice and I like it.

I keep seeing YouTubers with their fancy-pants impact drivers and I decided I wanted one (DCF850). This will probably live on its lowest setting for most of its life, because reversing the jaws on my 6 jaw requires that I loosen and then tighten 12 screws and it's tiring. I'll still torque them down by hand, but this should let me zip them out easily.

I also got some cool forceps and hermaphrodite leg calipers, but this post is already long so I'll just attach those without embedding them.

Although Milton has outsourced their consumer grade products to China, they do have good control over quality (if you're ISO 9001, that's with a capital Q, but in this case it's lowercase) and they kept the prices fair. Bummer they only make them in 1/4" base size, I still need to run 3/8 chucks for the high volume stuff. This is a trial run to see how they work. These V-type couplers are based on the DIN fittings that came with all the (budget) air tools I bought in Germany, so that's cool. I'm retiring an awful lot of Amflo couplers to make this change, but they just can't keep up. After all, a lot of pneumatics in our shops have been replaced with decent electric tools, so most of what is left is the stuff that benefits from high volume: Blast cabinet, plasma cutter, needle gun, and my 23-lb. 1960's vintage Ingersoll-Rand 1" air impact, appropriately named Juggernaut.

Cabin Fever 2023:

20230113-14 Cabin Fever.jpg
Starrett:
  • #224AA 0"—4" Interchangeable Anvil Micrometer (needs a new ratchet, but otherwise excellent condition)
  • #815 Toolmakers Hammer (needs a lens & retainer, but was only $10)
  • #196B1 Universal Back Plunger Indicator (NIB)
  • #104 Speed Indicator (NOS; was hidden in the "NOS STARRETT BOX," along with an Alling & Cory Co. 1/2" Micrometer – promotional item for checking A&C paper products? [Alling & Cory])
  • #771 Last Word ("STARRETT GLASS SQUARE INDICATOR"??)

Odds & Ends:
  • 1-1/4" x 3" x 10" hunk of Micarta™ (linen or cotton, definitely thin woven cloth: fiberglass would not be woven, just cross-laminated).
  • 2 sets of large-hole 1-2-3 blocks.
  • 2 pair of pre-dinged parallels; why get shiny new ones? Let someone else break a drill bit/end mill.
  • 2"Ø x 2-5/8" tall bench block (chamfered & ground drop from a Thomson shaft).
  • Handful of new & like-new pillar (narrow with safe edges) files (Vigor, Nicholson, Hayes, CNCO(?), Heller Bros) and a Simonds Style 2 (die file?).
  • 3/$1 miscellaneous punches.
  • And a gift for my wife: a shop-made carving mallet

All in excellent to new condition, things I can (and will) use and which were obtained at very good prices.

How much for the 196 ?
