What Did You Buy Today?

Now I'm confused about admitting after a long day in the winter sun I might seek to rub Chap Stick on my lips. :dunno:

@pontiac428

Over here, that is more commonly referred to as lip balm. And yes, there are indeed many dooble-entendre jokes about "Lip Balm".....:eek:

Nitpicking (or in other words ensuring technical correctness, which as we all know is the best kind of correctness) is kinda what we're all about, so I bloody hope you are nitpicking and continue to do so. ;):grin:

I was under the (incorrect as it turns out) impression that swarf was more along the lines of fine dust, like that produced by grinding and wasn't the result of the application of machine tools.

Eh, every day's a school day. :)

@SouthernChap

I think you missed the subtle meaning of "Not to nitpick, but....", which actually infers that yes, I am nitpicking!

English subtlty can be a bear if you miss the intent ;) :laughing:

And thus the beauty of the ability to play with the English language is plain to see...

Shame you Americans corrupted it, but hey, to each there own. Oh and BTW? Chips are CRISPS (<<< LINK) in England! LOL :laughing:

I think the dust you refer to is called smut, from the German Schmutz which means dust or filth.

And "nitpicking" is a preening behavior exhibited by primates, where they pick through another individual's hair to remove (and destroy by pinching between their teeth) the "nits" of various louse species, the term referring to the parasite's eggs.

I didn't buy anything today. But I do agree that Oxford is the authority on the language. I used to write reports for a boss who used Merriam Webster's, and I wished to tear that red canvas-bound book out of his hands to beat him with it.

It depends on where you are (Country/region et-al) But fine metal dust has always been known, to me at least, as "metal filings" or just plain old "filings". Filings as in small enough to have been created by the act filing or grinding. A description passed to my late step-father from engineers who were in the trade for life, he then passed it on to me through usage.

Heck, I well remember being in one of his (my late step-father's) engineer friends workshop once. Went to sit on a stool and his friend said "better not sit there, its covered in metal filings.", he then proceeded to put a clean folded rag on it so I could sit down.

Well it really came about two weeks ago but a total steal for a hardinge auto threader.....750 bucks had all the gauges,manuals, 5 die sets even the original receipt from 1982. Now just getting it all installed and operational.

Honestly the thing kind of scares me with all the stuff that needs to be set just right according to the manual so first few tests will be cutting air for sure. Hoping it runs as good as it looks, it is in really nice shape so hoping that translates to it still runs good.
