What are these?

Yup, punches. Not sure for what machine. For an ironworker maybe?

By the size, they may be watch maker items.

Punches seems plausible, but why the different size shanks, and why would you need a punch shaped like a flat blade screwdriver, and a punch with a rounded profile?

Punches are made to suit a purpose , shear , form etc . If you own a milling machine , I would hold onto them for single punch applications . You could own quite an arsenal if you ever acquired a shaper head . Put some clearance on them and punch away . :encourage:

If they are hardened, some could be used to broach with.

Y'all are certainly making me feel better about not knowing what these things are. If anyone can produce a link to a photo of one of these with a description you'll win the prize! Said prize TBD.

If you're interested you can check my introduction post from a few weeks back to see how I came about owning these. Unfortunately the gentleman who once owned these is no longer with us.

Look familiar ? Of course you need to make the die also . But , they can also broach without a die .

I have many one off punches and dies from way back when needed for different projects . Didn't even need to harden them for one offs . Machine a quick soft die and use the BP quill with the punch in it . I take it the previous owner won't be needing them any longer .

I think I understand now. These are blanks that the previous owner machined into whatever he needed at the time.
