What are the differences with a 'gunsmithing' lathe?

Hello folks,

While doing my research I've noticed many machines are labeled as 'gunsmithing lathes'.
Obviously they must have features which appeal to those involved in gunsmithing, just wondering what specifically these differences are.

For one thing, they all seem to be 12 x 36. What else?

Thanks!

Just a guess, but long enough to handle a barrel and large enough to take a barrel through the spindle.

And a long enough bed to hold a barrel in a steady to work on the outboard end. Although, I've been amazed at what some gunsmiths have used.

It's a gimmicky term for a 1.5" spindle bore and let's the buyers call themselves gunsmiths. If YouTube is any indication, it doesn't automatically qualify them to take money to work on other people's rifles, though!

My PM-1236 was referred to as an engine lathe? :dunno:

If it is referred to as a gunsmiths lathe does that mean the ATF can require registration and serial numbers on every part of it? Asking for a friend..:concerned:..

Not every part, just the parts "that provide housing or a structure for one specific, primary fire control component of weapons that expel a projectile" ...until further notice.
