[Source] What Are Some Good Quality Drills?

Everything use to be real simple when it came to quality bits....

I use to like Cleveland Drill bits....but they are very pricey , not made in US anymore, and the quality is not what they used to be. Hertel is a crap shoot on where they are sourced from.

You cannot go wrong with Triumph or Norseman which both are USA made bits.

Huot cases are not what they use to be! I have two recent ones I purchased (complete fractional/number/letter) and both had quality issues. Not even close to the quality of my 50 year old ones.

I picked up a new Hertel 115pc 118degree bright steel screw machine set for $169 delivered - missing 5 smallest wire sizes #56 - #60. I ordered those drills to complete the set for under $10.

The box has wire drill numbers and decimal equivalents, 64th sizes and number drills numbered.

You're lucky in the US. Here in the UK we can only seem to get screw machine drills (stub drills) individually. Mostly Dormer or Presto I'll grant but it gets pricey getting a set and that'll be metric only; no fractional, number or letter drills.

Drill hog are the real deal, one of the members sent me a letter set, I believe, in a trade, couldn't be happier. Lifetime guarantee. With that said, I would just buy multiples (5) of the most common ones I use, If I ever needed to buy.

I got those #56 - #60 drills in today, went to put them the Hertal box and saw there were drills there already - they had just slipped down during shipping. So now I have spares for those tiny drills that break more easily.

The spares are Black Oxide vs Bright Steel. Do they really hold cutting fluid better or is that just a supposition?

Dormer is nice and I am pretty sure they make fractional sets :encourage:

I was quite satisfied with my German Ruko drill set, until the set ended up missing a few drills thanks to the appalling plastic case the set was supplied with. I’ve been thinking of getting a Huot case for the set and replacing the missing drills with Dormer ones.
