Vee type QCTP vrs Aloris Style or Multifix 40 position style

Well guys this has been some interesting research.

I read through that HSM article, thanks Ed and it agrees with most of what I had already known. Yup, I had a Lantern post for the Logan, and it sat in the box with the other unused bits and bobs, I also have a four way turret post for the 14" lathe and have never used it. I did make one for the Craftsman and purchased an import one for the Logan which I used for years, but once I went to the AX on the Logan I never went back.

The Multifix seems to be highly regarded as one of the best tool holder styles, but it does not seem to have a lot of holders readily available for it. tools4cheap carries the import knockoff set, but not spare holders.

The Vee type, well, it is a really good holder, but again tool holders are almost non existant.

So I am thinking that I will probably aim at the "Industry Standard" so to speak and start saving my shekels and go with a dovetail type unit.

I am intriged by the Dorian Victory[sup]tm[/sup] set up with the thru coolant feature, so am going to look a bit closer into that series and the holders are interchangeable with the Aloris and Armstrong if Coolant is not being used. The coolant flow would be really handy when boring threading and parting off.

Now my compound is just over 3-1/2" wide and when I set the AX on it before I sold it with the Logan, it looked a bit small, almost like a pee in a drum, so I am leaning to the BXA size or in Dorian numbers the V30TC.

Like anything this may change.

Ok so here is the dilema.

My 1440V Lathe came with a QCTP, but it was the Vee style. The tool holders for these are rare as hen's teeth.

Your toolholder looks just like the one I've got. I had no idea of who made it or where to get parts. I finally figured out it was a Dickson Quick-change Toolholder from the UK.

Like you mentioned, parts are expensive and hard to get. I was thinking of trying to make some holders out of aluminum. If that doesn't work well ( I'm a newby and just made my first back plate, threads and all ) I might just give in and buy a modern holder.

Sowa has a similar system but the block dimensions do not seem to jive with what I have.

Algra also makes a similar system and the blocks seem to jive with the Sowa.

I have seen them listed on Alibiba on the internet from the orient.

I have seen them refered to as Italian Style QCTP.

Now since the lathe I got is from the same factory that makes Colchester machines that could be why they use a Dickson Style holder that was developed in Britian as Lathes UK claims.

The supplier of my lathe will bring in tool holders for me, at $90 - $95 each Quote is 1-1/2 yrs old so price may have changed), plus frieght and brokerage charges from Taiwan. Also there are only five different styles available. Standard, Vee Bottom, MT1, 1/2" Parting tool and Plain Boring Bar holder.

Thus my looking at other styles. One that I am interested in is the 5C Collet chuck, but that only seems to be available in the Aloris/Dorian/Armstrong style holders.

So I finally bit the bullet and got the Dorian Victory Tool Post. Still need to get some of the proper holders but this is a start.

Went with the V30TC which is equivalent to a BXA Aloris or 200 series import, Mounts up nicely on the lathe and I managed to tee off the coolant spray tube to hook up a line for the coolant.

The 201 holders that I have fit just right and it has a really nice locking system, When you engage the lever you can see the QCTP draw down and in and locks hard and tight.

I was trying to order the First Time Buyers kit which comes with the tool post, 4 holders, 4 tool holders and 5 carbide inserts, but KBC Tools has not been able to supply. I managed to find just the tool post at a clearance centre.

I will strees this, it seems to hold much better than the Dickson QCTP that came with the lathe.

everything stayed nice and cool that would be great for machining tool steels
that is a neat idea works well

Good looking tool post, Walter. I've never seen one quite like it.

Welcome back!

Well the problem with getting tool porn catalogues like KBC and Travers Tool is that you see all thes neat things and dream about how they would make life so much better. I know there are those that say that coolant is a waste of time in the home shop, but then like you Tony, I take on jobs for others and as the instructor used to say in school, if the machines not moaning, your not taking a deep enough cut. Deep cuts means lots of heat. I have taken stuff out of the chuck with pliers as it was too hot to hold onto. With coolant flowing, keeps the parts cooler and makes for better overall cutting.

So since I was going to spring for a new QCTP anyways, might as well get a good one.

Good to be back. If you need any help, let me know. Still have more files that could go in the downloads section and noticed a thread that needed editing earlier and then realized I could not do it.
