Turning #4MT drills down to #3MT...Possible?

Thanks so much guys, lots of possibilities, step one, I will check into the 3 to 4 adapter on ebay...I didn't even know there was such a critter. These drills, although ancient, are in darn nice shape maybe unused...and the thought of sinking a cutting tool into them make me shudder. Although I'm not much of a craftsman, I do respect the fine old tools they made back in the day.

Paul,

Look on E-bay for a MT4 to MT3 adapter, not 3 to 4.

I have an adapter. My mill is 3mt and my lathe is 4mt. Adapter works well...

I have one of these adapters, bought it 40yrs ago, works good too when trying to get into deep spots for extension, you can also buy it at KBCTools.com

Depending on how much clearance above the table your drill has they may become too long with a 4-3 Morse taper adapter but worth a try.
Old drills are way better than new eBay drills. I bought a box set of drills on eBay recently and most of them were bent I suspect during the heat treat phase.
if you want to turn the taper down to a MT3 chuck up a new MT3 drill and set your compound slide to the correct angle with a dial indicator held in the tool post. I’m assuming that your compound has enough travel to cover the distance.

lets us know how you go. :)

I have machined a roughing mill from MT4 to MT3,but I think you have your answer withe the sleeve. Only issue I can see is loss of space between spindle and bed.
