Trying to set up a trav-a-dial or dro on modified planner miller

Hey Jim I think you made our 80 year old machinists day with this information. He has been running this machine for a few years now with no readouts at all. I am going to talk to the owner about these today when he gets in. The machinist was wondering if you happened to have a picture of the box and his only question was wondering if like the steel chips interfere with the magnetic reader. Thanks again for all of your help

Glad I could brighten his day. :D

I've not had any problem with chips. On my mill, I just wipe the strip with my finger occasionally, on my lathe, the chips a bigger and don't seem to stick. Ask Jaeger about the latest read heads with the wipers on them, these were not available when I bought mine.

Here is the box on my lathe. This is only a 2 axis, but the part number I posted above is for a 3 axis. I don't have a box on my mill because the read heads connect directly to the computer.

Yep... looks like a great option for your planer set up. And I just have to comment, that is one awesome planer you have there. Such an awesome upgrade for a super machine. Bridgeport head on a big planer table.... the options and capabilities are just incredible.

Hey jim so we did just receive the readouts today they arrived super fast once we finally heard back from the company everything seems to be there but it did not come with instillation instructions is that something you happen to have access to? Im also going to reach out to the company we bought them from but i dont know how long it might take to hear back from them. Thank you again very much for the recommendation the cost of this set up was unbeatable

That's because there are no installation instructions. :) But the key is mount the head to something solid and stick the strip on something so you can get relative movement between the strip and read head. I used a 0.010 feeler gauge to set the spacing between the head and the strip.

Then plug the read heads into the box and turn the power on. My lathe DRO worked out of the box.

Oh well perfect I just didn't think it would be that simple I guess. Is that ten thousands critical? If there was a few thousands variation do you think it would be a problem we ordered a piece of aluminium we are going to mount to the machine to stick the tape to we weren't sure how perfect we have to get it

Not really critical, the spec is 0 to 1mm but they seem to work best at <0.015''. The aluminum mounting rail is perfect.

Awesome jim thanks again. We are going to set it up tomorrow. Ill let you know how it goes

Okay jim so we got the x axis setup on the machine and we were still waiting for the aluminum rail for our y axis so we decided to check and see if the x axis was working while we were waiting and set up a big set of verniers at 40 inches to see if we were in the ball park and the readouts are saying 200 inches it does return to zero good im just not sure how to calibrate it the manual is kind of dense for me to read so o thought maybe id ask if you had any thoughts thanks again

Ok, you have 1 micron read heads, and the DRO is set for 5 micron read heads. It's pretty simple to change the resolution, but I don't remember how to do it and my manual is in the shop. I'll go out there later. But look for Resolution.
