Trying to remove excessive backlash on x-axis

Really, that's how they made and repaired heavy vises. We've done it a few times in Colonial Williamsburg. The wire needs to be thoroughly annealed so it doesn't spring at all when being heated to solder into the hole. It is crude, but effective. If you have no lathe,it is an option.

Thanks for putting forward the option George. But I think the new nut is the direction I am headed. Neither my skills or home shop are up to the task you describe.

I am about to order a G0704 machine from Grizzly and my plan is that while I have the machine apart for cleaning, I am going to replace the X & Y lead screws with some better ones in order to reduce the backlash. I am not planning on doing a CNC conversion of the machine, but rather will keep it a DRO machine.
