Bill is correct, the vertical shear shape is by no means a common method of grinding a lathe tool. It is highly specialized and only intended for fine finishing cuts on difficult to machine materials. I've used it with success machining Invar 36. I also use the technique occasionally on wood and other soft materials like rubber.

I don't want to expound on my feelings about this thread, because it would be impolite to say what I think. I will say that I understand and agree with sssfox's response, and hope that he does come back.

Aw come on people If everyone thought the same there would be nothing. At my age
I gave up on how women think. My cat makes more sense. Anyways I enjoy reading
this stuff or ideas. This is my income, my teacher was a copy of that Rudy K. guy
on Utube somethings I learned are totally defient of the new world. Like when I read
a book I read from the back. Cant break the habit. This is a very good site and you
all know the snob sites (if you dont have cnc your nobody) I like to talk to the clueless,
so called newbes, doesnt anyone remember training wheels? There is a thing about
someones perhaps dumb question that was a solution to a problem I have had.
Hugo Young once said "A throughly understood problem always has a simple solution"

The flavor of this thread has changed from one where ideas are shared and discussed to one where opinions about other people's choices are the focus. No one says we all must agree on what is permissible in our own shops. So there is no point even bringing our opinion to the table of it takes away the harmony of the group. We all like the freedom to express ourselves, and should be able to express our opinion, but not at the expense of insulting another, or acting in a condescending manner towards other members. This thread is locked. Not to be re-opened this time.
