Toggle switch to reverse rotation

Wrong switch...

Swapping the red and black is altering the connection to the start winding.

The main or run winding also needs to be switched.

Drum switch used for this has 3 sets of contacts.

2 are used for the run winding with the third connecting the start winding.

The switch is wired, so it turns on the run winding and can flip the start winding depending on direction.

Using 2 toggle switches is easier.

One is 2 pole 1 position and is just on and off.

Other is 2 pole, 2 position to flip the red and black.

This is the way I did my WT drill press
The on off is a standard light switch, the 2 pole is what is sold as a 4 way light switch, they both fit in standard metal electrical boxes so easy to install. Just like the schematic on the motor.
The lathe came with a drum switch to do the same thing with one knob.

Yesterday I installed the toggle switch as Mark layed it out between the SPST on/off switch and the motor and it works great with the black(hot) wire in the SPST on/off switch. White goes direct to the motor and ground is connected to metal handy box and the motor casing. The reversing will only occur on a seasonal basis. Toggle switch was less than $7 at HD. Thanks everyone...

I am curious how you wired it. It looks like in Mark Silva's post the white wire from the wall goes to the DPDT toggle switch, is this what you did or does the white wire go directly to the motor?
Thanks

Sorry... Thanks for catching that. The white wire goes to the DPDT toggle switch. Black wire goes direct to the motor. My bad...

Thanks, its nice to know it works that way. On my drill press, the black is switched, the white goes directly into the motor and there are 4 wires that come out of the motor and get swapped to change direction.

Right. I understand it can work either way. Seems like a good solution for the problem.
