So THAT's what they mean by "going to the can". I always wondered why it was called that.

The term, "going to the can" and the "coffee break" are rooted in the same place.
Long before there were labor laws, there were large manufacturing companies that would deny breaks. Many people who were tied to machine or workstations would use "coffee cans" to relieve themselves while at their work stations. Thus, the "coffee" break and "Going to the can" were rooted in history.
