Ok, after purchasing several POS test indicators from various online resources, it's time to get a Mitutoyo.

At their website, what appears to be the one for me is a Pocket Type Series 513. Specifically, the 513-518T. It seems to have more than I need (including case - most important) and Amazon has it for a reasonable price, considering the name.

I'm a hobbyist. No contracts to fill, just puttering around my shop trying to build a steam engine as a hobby and other small projects on mini mill and mini lathe.

If you check my posts, you'll know all you need to know.

Does my selection sound right for me or do you have a better selection to suit my needs? (Mitutoyo only please. Tired of wasting $$$)

Mike

Those are fine indicators. Good price. Not sure of your holding situation for that. Good projects making holders for it if needed.

Cutting oil is my blood.

You may want one with dovetails unless you need the reach of the pocket type. Worth taking a look at the video, evidently the newer designs use a one piece mechanism which is more durable and easy to replace if damaged. I have several Compac and Interapid types, they are multi-turn so give a bit more range if needed. On internal dimensions I use a a long reach version stylus, the stylus length is specific to the model you purchase. If buying from Amazon I always check who is selling the item, if it is not a main stream vendor then you have a higher chance of getting a fake unit.

Said Mitutoyo brand and Mitutoyo Store. I never would suspect a fake from Mitutoyo Store. If it were, Amazon would have a big problem.

I know you’re set on a Mitutoyo and I have the same model that you are considering (purchased ages ago), but honestly use one of my Shars 0.0005” DTI’s more often as their dovetails more easily adapt to a variety of mounting positions. The only problem I have run into with the Shars units is that they don’t like being dropped (I’m sure the Mitutoyo wouldn’t like it easier, but I’m more careful with that one).

According to the Mitutoyo site, this model comes with the usual array of dovetails. I bought the model from Amazon and if it doesn't have them, it's going back because every holder I have uses dovetails or the 3/16" mounting stem.

BTW mksj,
  • Product Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.4 x 3.3 x 1.3 inches; 8.8 Ounces
  • Item model number ‏ : ‎ 513-518T
  • Date First Available ‏ : ‎ November 9, 2004
  • Manufacturer ‏ : ‎ Mitutoyo
  • ASIN ‏ : ‎ B0006J3YAI
  • Country of Origin ‏ : ‎ Japan
And it was noted as Mitutoyo Store.

They describe those items in the video. I am not sure what you want, I made a valid suggestions, I do not buy these indicators from Amazon because their descriptions and pictures often do not match the product you recieve. Why don't you try a different distributor that actually knows something about the product they are selling and you can ask them whats in the box. You also will quickly find that a 0.001" test indicator will probably be too coarse an increment in the long run. If you want a full set indicator see below. I am done with this thread.

Took your advice and cancelled the order. I will be going with this one as you recommended.
