Teaching myself to broach a keyway. Question?

I never had anybody explain anything more than the basics. But I felt like once I went to the arbor press I could feel when something was going wrong. Things worked themselves out the more I did it.

I did get to use my antique 22tn screw press to do a 3/8” broach and it worked great. Retained the “feel” with way less effort. And never have to worry about running out stroke.

My import set of broaches have worked great for me at a fraction of a name brand. YMMV.

The only thing I can add is if the broach digs in, push the BUSHING out, remove the broach, turn the part over and start again.

Somewhere, I think one of Guy Lautard's books, I saw a suggestion to grind a small flat on the end of the first tooth, thereby removing the rake and making a scraping cut with that tooth, which would reduce the tendency of the broach to dig in and tilt.
