I have recently built a taper attachment for my clausing , I find that when cutting the cutter seams to not stay in the cut very well and pulls the slide back away from cut. , I am using a pointed cutter, the slide on the taper works great(like the one on this site video) until i start the cut.does anyone have an ideal of what this Light weight machinist doing wrong.

Sounds like a backlash or something in loose problem when your bit backs away. With the machine shut off, put a mag base on the saddle and rest the dial indicator on the cross-slide and push and pull the tool post with about 25 - 50 pounds of pressure and see if there is any movement, then track the movement down if needed by moving the mag base to the cross-slide and indicate the compound, then over to the taper attachment. More then 001" is to much, you need to have some room in the ways to hold a thin lubricating oil film. Remember you can bend things with to much pressure. Push on the post and release and zero the dial, then pull it and release and see how much "lost motion" you have. When you apply pressure you and don't release you will be bending or stretching things bit and will get a "false reading".

Will do, I have alway like talking better than typing .i am Old school for sure. It will be after holidays before I can get back on this project, wife has me hooked up to tight for a few days.
This is so nice to have feed back like this ,sure saves on wasting time. As a blacksmith buy profession I am some what limited in the machining skills. However I have put together some nice equipment in my shop and will get up to speed sooner or later. I have 2 Bridgeport mills ,clausing lath, drill press, iron worker, 2 punches, cnc table 6 x 12 I built myself.,surface grinder, forge , power hammer, Lindsey engraving system. My reason for telling you this, I would be happy to address any question anyone might have pertaining to blacksmithing iron work , Horse Bit and spur building .
Thanks again Richard ,I look forward to knowing you and benefiting from you knowledge.

David, I need to share a story about Blacksmithing...ha ha. Might save one of the other members a knock on the noggin...lol

A few summers ago when I taught a rebuilding / scraping seminar in Richmond Ca. The host had a friend who has a commercial Blacksmith Shop where we held the class. When I walked into the place, I make the mistake and said "where do you keep the horses you shoe?" I was abruptly told that a Farrier shoes horses and a Blacksmith does Metal design and forges metal structures. So for all of you like me, who watched Gunsmoke and you saw a sign that read Blacksmith and he was shoeing horses. Well times have changed.

The fellow out there was a past president of the Blacksmith Association and his name is Michael Bondi.

David,

A few pictures of your attachment would help us to offer advice. There are a lot of designs out there for taper attachments. Some are stiffer than others.

I must tell you that I started out shoeing horses when I was young, however I found out after about 6 mo. That i was a foot to tall, (work wil kill you. I did however love the forge work and evolved into a commercial shop that I still have today.
