Taking more aggressive cuts

I have a Logan model 1955 11” lathe . I’ve had this lathe since the mid 80s . I have used nothing but HSS tools .
HSS tools can be re sharpened many times and to any shape that is required . Refreshing a cutting edge removes almost no material .

Search this is forum for vid ( 1/2 inch depth of cut in alum on 11 inch Logan ).
I used a carbide tool with about a 45 degree back rake . The Logan has no lead screw so I hand fed it . I made the same cut on leadloy with the same results. I
think hss would show about the same result.

It's been my experience when using smaller lathes that tool geometry is everything. 10" Logans are rigid enough to take aggressive cuts. Get a hss blank and experiment with different grinds. You will be amazed at what a small change in your geometry can do.
