Suggestions on less than full size mill

one option may be to put up a wanted ad on here or PM and see if the seller would be willing to load and ship. Shipping wouldn't be trivial, but it would increase your search range and likelihood of getting a hit.
Back when I thought that I could fit a Bridgeport in my shop, I looked at that. Fastenal is actually pretty cheap. Except the seller would have to be willing to prepare it for shipping and deliver it to the local Fastenal location.

The problem is you're buying something sight unseen. And there's a lot of junk out there.

I did just that, put a WTB ad on Practical Machinist, when I was looking for a small horizontal mill.
A guy answered that had a Vernon, which was just right for me, but he was up in Michigan - He sent loads of photos, details, etc. on it
It took a couple months to get it together for him, as he was recovering from Covid, and was feeling pretty weak.

Anyway, I arranged for Fastenal shipping, and the guy actually built a nice crate on a pallet.
The shipping came to $178, delivered to the Dothan, AL store - It all worked out perfectly.
I guess the take-away here is that you need to be very patient, and be prepared to do some leg work.

I gave up trying to find a small vertical knee mill, and when HF finally got their 6x26's back in stock, I ordered one immediately at the $1800 price
Turns out, it was literally the very next day that they raised the price to $2500, but they honored the original price.
If you give up looking for an older US made one, and go this route, be aware - You really need to take one of these mills apart to clean it, and clear the filler from the moving parts. I did mine, as I had planned to paint it, I found out you really should do this anyway - Pretty gritty inside.

I had to go up to Jackson MS a few years ago, to get my larger lathe, a Clausing Colchester 13x36, and it wasn't exactly cheap, but was a decent lathe, and the seller (a working machine shop) carefully loaded it on my trailer, so that worked out.
I'd suggest that you can't be looking just locally, but have to be willing to drive at least as far as a single overnight distance.
I will admit though, that the older I get, the shorter that distance has become ;~)
Anyway, good hunting.

The Grizzly 0759 I found is about a 5 hour drive. Just a little longer than the drive to Ocala to pick up the South Bend.

I just don't know if it's a good machine for $3,000. It would be nice if I could fit it in the back of my Explorer too. That would make the drive better.

$3000 for

$3000 for that mill is too close to new price, IMO.

I'm sure it's fine, but it's still a glorified mill drill, and I thought you were looking for a knee mill.

I know it's only about $200 off list. But, it's listed as "unboxed but never used". Add in no shipping or sales tax and that's another $500 off. which means I would be getting it for about $700 less than purchasing it from Grizzly. Granted there would be no 1yr warranty.

I do want a small knee mill. But I have my search radius at 250 miles and I'm not finding anything. While a Clausing, Rockwell or PM 940 would be better, I'm just not finding them.

Well, I guess if you think you'll be happy with it - At least, if it is what the seller says, it should be somewhat ready to go, with no restoration needed.
I think it would go in the back of an Explorer, if you take it off the stand. It will be heavier than you think (the mill itself), so be prepared.
Good luck.

Go ahead and buy the Grizzly. Just be prepared with extra cash when the exact machine you've been looking for almost 2 years shows up in the next town over next week ;)

That's how it always seems to work....

I suspect you'll be better off renting a small trailer than trying to wrestle it into and out of your Explorer though.

Cheers,

John

My offer of $2,500 was accepted. Made the trek up to Birmingham yesterday. Mill was as advertised. Brand new, never used. Still had some of the packing grease on it. Set it up this morning and made a test run on some aluminum. Night and day compared to my 3-in-1 BridgeMill. The guards and safety switch are a pain though. They may have to go.

The price is  to me but that is simply because those mills without DRO were under $1600 new when I was shopping several years ago. At current pricing and actually being "as new" seems like a decent deal, saving you at least $1000 vs buying new from Grizzly.

I was seriously considering a G704 or PM25 when I found my mill, as they seem a nice small to midsize mill.

Congratulations on your new shop addition.
