They would also be good for drilling the bolt holes on buttstocks for shotguns, etc. I am fitting up a butt to an American Arms over & under 28 Ga. That is unbelievably fiddlesome work.
Before I noticed the sharp angled cutting edge,I thought for a second that they were brass drills. Brass drills have a flat side with no hook to the tip. Keeps them from jerking through the other side of the hole. I have several.
I read about these last night in the Henry Ford Machine Shop book. They are the old style flat drill bits. They create powder so need to clear holes but are more accurate in that they don't go off center like today's drill bits (sometimes).

What I would be interested to see is the machine that drives them. Do they need a pilot hole or do they start themselves? Looks with that sharp point that they would self start.
