Straight Edge For Mill Touch Ups

Just in case you wanted to get a 12"x18" plate like I did, Enco has extended their Cyber Monday sale until 11PM Eastern tonight using CYBER and MONDAY for the codes (25% off / Free UPS Ground Shipping). The larger plates ship via truck freight.

Thanks everyone. I've been checking ebay here and there for either a casting or blank or whatever I can find. Saw a couple promising things, but nothing perfect.

Compsurge - I was fairly set on a 18" x24" plate, so no go on that Free Shipping.. yet.. I do recall Enco doing a free shipping, freight included deal sometime during Dec last year. my rationale is that I could use the angle to fully scrape in the 26" I'd need for the ways on my table, which are just about 25" for the X.

Check craigs list. Have seen a number of plates, varying sizes, for good prices and much higher quality than the china stuff.

tertiaryjim - I had not been ignoring craigslist. I am on it every day, and either missed a few opportunities, or never heard back from the few I saw. But last night, a light shined down, and a listing popped up. So, I am the proud new owner of a 36"x 24"x5" granite surface plate and associated stand! WhooWhoo!

Now, to procure some sort of straight edge blank/camelback casting, or whatever I can come up with.

Well done! Wish I had been a little smarter and/or better informed when I was putting together scraping tools.
Have missed some good machine deals from craigs list. Mainly because I wasn't able to move or load stuff.
After a few months of scraping practice, you'll probably want to wring all our necks.

i made mine out of the bed of a 100 years plus old lathe that i was going to scrap anyhow
it had two flat ways on the back and two inverted v's on the front
i cut out the back of the bed and cleaned it up on the mill
i did get it fairly flat initially, but i found that over time it moved
rescraped it twice in the past half year
so now i am thinking about making a " heat treat" oven big enough to hold a 4 ft long 6 inch high 2.3/4 inch wide piece

I have a straight edge my dad cut out of a old machine tool member. Last time I tried to scrape on it, it still moved around. That was thirty years ago. I was thinking of trying it again and see what happens.

You may be surprised at what new granite costs from an American company like standridge. I too am gearing up to scrape in a cast iron lap for compressor valves NG
