Step pulley question: Should i tap and install a set screw?

Not knowing exactly what you have there, I will ask you this question. Does the end of the motor shaft have a threaded hole? By looking at the pics, it appears the motor shaft has a step. Does the pulley seat against the step?

The reason I ask is, Ive seen a few that had a set up as described. The pulley was set down on the step, and what looked like a socket was dropped over the top, and a bolt went through that part, and into the motor shaft.

Your saying it appears to have never had a set screw, and if the pulley is retained in this way, you should see the marks on the top of the pulley.

Just a thought as to why you dont think it ever had a set screw.

It is actually sitting on the outside of the splined shaft. Yes it does sit against the step, downward. With the splined shaft coming up through there is nothing that could be tightened down.

There are no marks on the top of the pulley. It slips on and off easily. It appears only that gravity holds it down with nothing to tighten down on it. This is on the quill shaft.

I will look at it again and compare it with my Bridgeport and other drill presses.

Thanks for your cautions. I will definitely give it a second and third look.

I had to go back and look at the pics, the 1st one in particular. On the smaller diameter it almost looks like the pulley was moving up and down a bit during rotation. You can see straight lines going around and in between them there are angled lines. These all appear to be worn in. This plus the absense of the setscrew mark on the key tells me it never had a setscrew. Is this what I see or is it an illusion?

Like you, I don't believe it ever had one. I am going to take a real close look at it this morning. There is an upper bearing to it. perhaps it doesn't need one. It won't be the first time I have been fooled.

Nice to have a forum to toss these things around.

I put it back together with a new belt. With the new bearings it was very quiet so I think I will leave well enough alone and watch it. I noticed that the motor pulley was a bit off. I will correct that tomorrow.
