As a disclaimer, I have read threads on this forum from craftsmen whose skill far outpace mine. Still, I hope the thread will be read and appreciated at least minimally.

Lathe is a South Bend 9C that I acquired in a lot of two lathes earlier this year (Other was the Atlas 618 which has been completed and sold). The serial number of this lathe is 59480 which places it in 1935. Serial number listed in W.S. Wells are 418 and 482, both from 1935. The lathe was dismantled when I bought it and was somewhat weathered as you can see. It appears to be more or less complete (minus gears, of course). The bearings in the head stock and pulley shaft appear to be in great shape but I will know more about that later. The machine appears to have rolled over onto the front. X axis rough crank shaft is bent as is the handle for the cross feed. I have purchased the shaft, hand-wheel and gear for the apron from eBay for 70 bucks delivered. I will just straighten the cross feed handle.

Lathe came apart easily. No seized hardware. I made the rolling base as a first step to make the project easier to handle. Of course, the pulley rack and motor will hang from the back of the lathe. I would like to suspend the motor (110 volt one horse reversible) under the pulley rack. That method may produce a slightly smaller footprint (Space in my shop is at a premium). It will also move the center of gravity back a little. Once I am comfortable with the placement of the motor I will add a diagonal stiffener to the base to prevent racking.

Just a heads up, you do not have a C.
Yours is the O workshop.
This becomes important when finding change gears,

Making decent progress on this project. This is my second 9 series South Bend lathe and I liked the way the other one worked. I finished the rebuild of the tail stock. Just using Lowe's spray paint (Rustoleum and Krylon) in Winter grey for most of the lathe. Details at eleven.

Stripped and painted the bed. Scraped the ways and rebuilt the tail stock.

I am not certain as to the reason, but two threads are very close to identical. I moved the previous post from that thread to this one and will avoid using that thread. If administrators can help with this situation, I would be much obliged. I know I did something wrong but I can't identify my mistake.
