Actually Barry gave me the info I needed - I asked him about back gear alignment in a comment on one of his vids, and I got a reply on how to align bearing on small bull gear. Put everything back together and now have neutral!!!! The root cause was the location of the gear on the backgear shaft. I just had to loosen the setscrew, drive it down lower, and tighten it. I learned a lot in the process, and am no longer intimidated by the upper half - the lower spindle section is another story - hope I don't have to dig into that any time soon.
That motor was a bit heavy for a 70 year old, but I eventually won.
