I'm looking for headless screws like the item below, but am striking out. Can anyone advise where I can find a box?

I'm sure you'll find it here somewhere. They are called standoffs

Mcmaster sell partially threaded studs, no slot in them though. Sounds like you need a lot, otherwise they would be easy to make out of those partially threaded studs or a long bolt that is not fully threaded.

What are they used for?

McMaster is my goto vendor, and I was surprised they didn't have them. I know I could fabricate them but It would be so much more convenient to just buy a box from somewhere (other than overseas).

Plan "B" would be to cut off the heads of stock bolts and slit the screwdriver slot with a slitting saw. Or perhaps omit the slot entirely and finger tighten then Loctite the screws in.

I was going to make a lathe tool holder rack with them like the one below.

Mill two flats so you can line them up in a row vs. setting up for slotting if you don t have a horizontal mill

Sounds like a set screw, but maybe you need something longer. I found slotted-head set screws at McMaster but they max out at 1/2" (and you have to go to 1/4-20 size to get that).
