Hi all, i have done quite a bit of large ring 98 mauser work in the past. I recently aquired a small ring 7mm that I think is a 95 spanish. Will a 98 large ring extractor fit as far as everything but the engagement claw?

It can depending on what you really have. can you take a pic of the action? There are 95s,96s,93s, and small ring 98s. I'm fond of the SR 98s because of the cock-on-open. The others can be modified to COO. Some folks don't like to but I haven't seen any issues with it. Just remember SRs are not as strong as LR 98s. I stay with the lower intensity calibers.

the problems were with the commercial SR. the original military ammunition developed over 50,000 psi.
SAAMI downgraded commercial production of ammunition Maximum Average Pressure to 46,000 psi.
shooting military ammunition through a commercial action is where the problem lies.

Original SR 7x57 M93 mauser's original ammunition produced an average of over 50,000 PSI.
respectfully, they are not weak actions

I did not say the SRs were weak. Just not a good idea to hotrod them or try to make magnums. A good quality SR 98 will hold any of the 30-06 size rims factory cartridges without any problems. I think the issues are with poor condition actions and the "faster-more powder cause it fits, mongers" who try to make magnums out of them. .308 is a rather high pressure round and I shoot a SR that was given to me as a receiver only. Ever try to find a SR Mexican bolt? They are way different and pricey when you find one. I finally saw an article where a smith shortened a Model70 by 1/2". Ah, bolt shortening 101. I took a 98 bolt and shortened it to fit, then the lugs aren't exactly the same so more work to get them to fit, long story short, it now is a .308 with an ultralite Leopold 3-9 in a blind magazine Choate stock and weights in at 6.5 lbs. It will in the end become a 257 Roberts but the 308 is a hoot to shoot. It's still unfinished and ugly but it's still mine. I did a Model 70 side swing type safety too. I'm pondering some lightening cut ala G33-40 German SR full length paratroop actions. I wonder just how much I can remove weight wise. All the strength is in the front ring so a few light mill cuts will just remove more metal ,less stuff to carry up and down the hills.

My apologies i shouldn't have put words into your (writing)mouth, i got what i thought was an implication- that was my fault:oops:
I agree with your sentiments concerning making a magnum from a SR.
Luckily when i bought my 7x57 Mexican, it came complete- i haven't tried or had need to find a bolt.- i bet they are like hens teeth though...
i like the 7x57 mausers!!!
Nice Work on the model 70!!! sounds like a shooter!!
.257 is a sweet round, i haven't owned one but i got a few pulls at the range with a guy that was having trouble with his scope.
a real nice one for sure.
I'd look forward to seeing you work, if you'd like to post it!

Another point to consider on these actions is simply age. I have sported a few of the Spanish SR mausers but have always kept the cartridge pressures in the same basic range of the original 7x57. This is the same approach I use on any of the old actions.

Thanks all for the replies. Just tossing around an idea for a project. I have had this 7x57 mauser with badly pitted throat and no stock laying aroud the shop for years. Thinking of building up a .300 blackout. Thinking of converting it to hold ar-15 magazines. Threading muzzle etc. I think I answered my question about extractor. Brownells has a replacement extractor with extra long claw for custom work.
