Making some extended take down pins for my AR's and now I need to cut the slots for the detent to slide in.

The pins are made from some scrap steel that cuts easy with HSS.

I will use my HF mini mill, what should I be using for a cutter ? Carbide ?, 4 flute ?

Thanks.

I made several pins out of 304 SS. I cut the slot with a 3/32 4 flute carbide end mill. Worked fine.

BTW. The holes at each end of the slot are approx. 1/16". It is very important to have a super smooth finish on the shaft of the pin for proper function. The tiny lines left by turning will be noticeable in use. Turn it as smooth at possible and slightly oversize. Then finish with abrasive.

Here is the first pin with the pin holes marked. Finished with 500 and will polished after I cut the slot. Also the inside of the shoulder needs some cleaning up. It's right at .250 and fits a little tighter than the stock pin.

Thanks again.

I like those pins. Great idea that I hadn't seen in my small world.
