size of square drives on hand taps

Eureka!!!! My 5/8 tap fits my six point impact socket with no slop whatsoever, it couldn't fit any better. The HF socket says it fits 11MM & 7/16 fasteners, I've had that socket set for years and years and never used them.

The Walton Company makes tap extensions that are the correct size to snugly fit tap shanks; they also make tap extractors and machine tapping extension shanks. Trying to use an ill fitting socket for tapping is going to be frustrating.

I hear ya ben, a loose fitting tap will make for a miserable time.

Maybe someday but I'm not there yet. The last time I tried to saw I got so disgusted I said I would never use one again.... I don't even want to know where they are.
