I used a 1/2"X1/8" slot cutter (#404)on my mill. Clamped the material in the vise with a set of v blocks, centered the the tool height on the shaft diameter and cut into the side using the Y axis. If I remember correctly, Machinery's Handbook said .1355" deep.
I know this will sound corny but, what makes this type of work so unique and enjoyable to me is being able to use your tools and equipment to repair and maintain your own machines. It also pushes you to improve your skills and precision and try other operations as different projects arise.
