Setting up angular contact bearings

If they are flush then follow the suggestion in the video I linked, or if your talented with a grinder and can clean the dust out well then follow chips&more's suggestion. If you stack the bearings as noted in the instructions you can see if they are flush or not immediately. they shouldn't be able to touch. With preload touching is optional although I discourage it.
 
The design of the spindle determin the mounting of AC bearings. The DF mounting won't take the loads that are on a mill spindle.
 
AC bearings are built so that when the inner and outer races are clamped flush, (like the pic shows) the bearings will be properly preloaded.

That's exactly what I did on my 5820. I used a single .001 shim, which seemed plenty to get the preload - I'm not even sure I bottomed the clamping nut out. Without a shim, there was a few thousands play in the final assembly, which I did not think would be ideal for milling.
