Sci-fi meets agriculture

Yamaha came out with this little thing about 15yrs ago.

Most insects are on the underside of a leaf. That is why an air blast sprayer works well. The down wash from the drone might work similar to a helicopter down wash thus penetrating the leaf canopy.

A drone would not come anywhere close to what an air blast does. The air is moving 200 MPH at the exit nozzle and beaucoup CFM on my unit. It takes 60+ Hp to run the fan. The blast makes the spray into a mist that coats both sides of the leaf and the fruit.

Now something like sweet corn earworm, it would make huge sense to drone it on. The plants are too big and close for ground equipment. Most fields way to small for a full size airplane.

You are correct on the air blast sprayers. The one I have has two forty inch fans and is run with its own six cylinder diesel engine of about 180 horse power. It still won’t reach the tops of some of the larger pecan and walnut trees

It's about 10 hours from Atlanta to Texas, it's another 10 hours across Texas.
You ain’t driving across Texas on I-10 to ElPaso in 10 hours, more like 12-13 if you hammer down on it. Take my wife along, stop a Bucee’s twice, it’s gonna be a 15-16 hour trip.

Down wash from the drone was significant from where I took the picture. Of course here they're spraying corn not trees ...

Say, what was your target pest? Only thing I could think of was earworm.

I guess traffic has worsen in the almost 40 years since I moved from Texas…..

Yea, it’s a little over 800 miles, but Beaumont is getting bad, Houston is 70 plus miles of traffic, San Antonio is a construction zone like Houston always has been and now takes over an hour to get across. El Paso has grown and I haven’t been there in a dozen years, I’m sure it’s much worse as well.

Google maps says that if you start in Brownsville and want to drive to Colorado, you would leave Texas, 13.5 driving hours later at Texline. The only major city you have to drive through is San Antonio. only a few miles are on an Interstate. Living in Austin, I have made the trip from Austin to Brownsville and Austin to Texline many times. Fortunately, I have not had to go from Brownsville to Texline.
