Sandblast Cabinet: New addition to the shop.

:drink:Congtats on the new tool Ray! Sorry for the delayed response but I have been laid up in bed most all week. I use #80 glass bead and 150 alum oxide. The bead does good for light polishing of clean metal but is very inefficient at removing rust or scale. 150 Alum oxide does good on light rust but still leaves a fairly smooth finish. Sand is deff out and in my HO the media HF sells is way to coarse and there bead doesn’t work as well as the stuff I buy from the local blasting supply company. These guys also showed me that mixing alum oxide and glass bead makes a good finish as well as cuts good.

Don't use sand, its way too dusty. I use Black Beauty, a coal slag product, for when i need to get it done quick. It is inert and makes real short work out of rust and paint. It's aggressive. It'll leave a texture.

Tractor supply sells it , if theres one near you. If you can't find it there, I've gotten it at a mason supply yard also used for blasting. It's same stuff thats used on black roofing shingle granules. It's also used on traction tape for stairs etc... It's about $20 for 100 lbs, cheap and effective.

It all depends on what you're doing. I have glass bead and walnut shells for the finer things.

I've had my cabinet for a few years now, and of all I've tried, "green grit" is the best yet.
Very good cut, and lasts for ages before it dusts away.

It's a by-product of the copper smelting industry, and very cheap (heck, they threw it away for years and years before realizing it could be useful!).
Think I paid $10 for a 50lb bag last time.

Way too many options here... (love it). What's scary is that I envision needing to do both scale removal and finer polishing/finishing work. Do you guys switch-out the media? HR steel is usually a good bit cheaper than CR and I like the minimal stresses inside HR. It's dirty though and from now on, I'm going to descale it before machining it. When I'm done machining some things, would like to put that nice pearl finish on it.

Anyhow, I haven't had much chance to practice with it. Still building some shelves and a table/bench for the "sandbox" that will have room below to hold the heat treating oven when it's not in use.

Tripletap... Hope you're feeling better. Did you get sick?

Ray, this is the one I was talking about. The little yellow vac is all ya need. And my kid routed out the leg
foot print on plywood and put casters on it. sam

Ray,

I do not switch out media. What I do is turn the pressure down to achieve my desired finish.

The idea of leaving a light bulb in there to ward-off moisture is good so I'll do that. I have a day off today and plan to weld-up the cart for it and have an idea for a heating pad or light bulb on the underside of it. Will post pics later. I need to run out and get a regulator today too. I don't have room for a "cyclone" thing so the plan is to caulk some of the little gaps in sheet metal and will affix some filter fixtures of some sort over the various portals. Man, I'm liking this thing! Air and "sand"... what a good idea...

Busy day ahead, 2nd cup of coffee is taking effect and time to get rolling...

Another thing that helps to keep the moisture out is to keep the media clean. Allowing a build up of dust will promote and retain moisture and then it all just wants to stick together.

You can stamp this as "That Was Easy"! Stopped-off at the metal store and found out they have a PT job opening and one of my son's is looking for a PT job. -Hmmmm, how cool would that be?

Knocked this out fast and finished putting up the shelves. Will finish the lathe bench shelves tomorrow but they're all welded and set. Need to cut some plywood and it's too late for that kind of noise right now.

There's room on the bottom to put the heat treating oven that's coming up soon.
