Rookie gun builder Sharps 45-70 too ambitious?

Ohh hey, off on a tangent...If you want to see a purty home built gun here is the purtiest I have ever seen..Way better than anything I will ever build..

Wow, that's a whole lot of very good filing and finishing. It would be interesting to see what's going on inside, too bad there aren't pics of the internals. I'm not a big fan of that much engraving and inlay work but you have to admit it is a work of art!

Wow! I didn't really expect this much of a response.

Bill & Tom you nearly talked me out of it. But when I
said I was a rookie, that may be a little bit of a stretch.
I'm a pretty good machinist. If i can get drawings, material
specs, heat treatment, ect. I can make just about anything.

Alphawolf you're right, you'll never know it you don't try.
Thanks for the encouragement

I figure I'll buy a barrel and if I find drawings I'll build the
reciever and insides.

If I build it and I don't feel comfortable I'll just hang it on
the wall. Surley I can make 1 side look good enough for that.

I know an AK47 or AR15 would be easier and less time consuming.
But I enjoy a good challenge from time to time. Right now the
challenge is finding the drawings.

I looked for the drawings on the assra website but have not
found them yet. I'll keep looking. If anyone has the link I'd
real thankful. Ranch23 could you post that link?

Thanks for all the responses

Cuzzinitt If you build the Sharps youre invited to bring it to my place and we'll color case harden it and while its in the furnace we can step outside and cast you a bronze buttplate .Or maybe youre already setup for those operations yourself? If not I can show you how simple it is to get setup and do those things..

.I regret that I know nobody locally who shares my interest in the old guns..Seems everybody I know 'round home here is into hunting with modern guns built with plastic stocks and stamped sheetmetal parts.

Have some drawings ordered and you are welcome to a set.
That would be great!! They would already be ordered, but I needed to call to order. I figured I
would have to wait untill the holidays were over to order them.

Man I'm sorry. I thought I responed the same time as I responded to ranch23 about his offer for plans.
I didn't mean to seem ungrateful, I'd love to come down and do the color case hardening. I've never done it before.

I just ordered "More Single Shot Rifles and Actions" off Ebay and hope to recieve it soon! I've been looking at
Drawings There are many less parts in a Sharps than and AK or an AR.

So the Sharps build is on!! I still think I will buy the barrel and posibly the stock, I have some friends at Graco
in Gravette, Ar

I found a copy of "Single Shot Rifles and Actions" on AMAZON for 160 bucks, I really got a little sticker shock!
Didn't buy it.

My lathe died about 3/4 of the way thru a production run and ruined about $400.00 tooling this week on top of
service calls that actually pay the my bills. Parts to fix the lathe are about a grand and won't be here for 3 weeks.

It's been a wild week. But thats no excuse to blow you off Alpha. I'm really sorry.

Hey Gang,

I found Frank DeHaas' book Single Shot Rifles and Actions I also have a set
of 1874 sharps drawings on the way.

Here is my latest question:
What type of material would be best for the reciever?

I'm really itching to get started on this project

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Alright gang, the Sharps build is on. It may only be a wallhanger and never get shot but It'll be on the wall!
I got the prints off ebay I chose them after realizing the ones from ASSRA were not full size. I didn't think it would matter much but there seems to be alot of diminsions missing. Having 1 to 1 prints make it easier to find some of the numbers that are not there.

Right now I'm drawing the receiver on Gibbscam and attempting to make a solid model. i'll keep everyone posted with progress and pictures when there is something to take a picture of.
