Restoring Jet 1024PY

I wonder how long a plastic gear would last?

Folks, a small update.

Got the munted worm wheel off the apron assembly, for a little dressing and dimensional characterisation.

Worm gear looks to be 3 degree helix angle, and so with the help of a colleague got a solidworks model of the worm wheel done up and 3D printed.

The point of this is to ensure I don't spend proper money on a new gear that is not quite the right spec.

The 3D printed unit fit well, and worked under cordless drill power.

Gives me sufficient confidence to go get a proper one or two made.

Will do a bit more testing to see what the wear patterns on the plastic gear can tell me about any wrongness, but at this stage I'm ready to get one made that's not plastic.

Cheers.
Outstanding work! Are there any places in your area that could 3D print that gear in metal?

G'day Nesse1,

There sure are some 3D metal printing places in my area, though I expect eye watering prices.

First two regular machining prices received AUD600 to AUD1,000 a piece.

We may well be seeing how long a plastic gear lasts...

Hi Folks,

Another quick update - got some reasonable prices for gear manufacture from our great neighbour to the North.

Let's see what it turns out like.

If anyone needs to use this design, I have attached it to the post.

Solidedge part file, .stp file and a pdf.

Cheers

Folks,

A brief update - the parts arrived and they look the business.

For the photo in case it's not immediately obvious - moving left to right - original part - new part - 3D printed part.

Hope to fit and reassemble it all this weekend finally.

Cheers

Folks, minor update. First time getting the chuck unscrewed from the spindle.

10 outta 10 for the 50/50 ATF / Acetone mix to get the thing moving.
Almost an easy job. Found a lot of small brass shavings in the thread which can't have helped.

Also, updated the hard to access socket head hex screws for the chuck mount with studs, loctite and lock nuts.
Should not loosen up any time soon.

Cheers
