Repair ideas!

I don't think I would be using the JB weld either. I would be worried about it self ejecting and the operater getting hit with the pieces. I know its probably your main key you use to tighten your work, but I would try the other two keys, with a known piece of round stock, and the indicator should reveal if the run out is better or worse.
After all, it is a 3-jaw chuck, so some run out will be present. Using on of the other spots to tighten up may be worth looking into. You might avoid repairing the original this way.

Thanks for the ideas guys! A couple of things to sock away for potential future issues. For now I think I'm going with the socket portion silver soldered in.

Kevin,

When you get around to the final repair, how about posting some photos? Would be greatly appreciated.

When I bought my 10" Atlas some 45 years ago, my pinion looked fairly similar. The gunsmith that sold it to me had found a hex key that fit pretty well. I don't know how long he used it that way, but I used it it for a few years when I found I could buy a new scroll and pinion for a fairly reasonable price.

My chuck said Atlas, so I got the parts from Clausing. A few years later I called about a chuck part and they disavowed any knowledge of them every having sold chucks.
