Ray, Which is what I said in the last sentence in the first paragraphRJ, You are correct about this but, I'd also like to mention that a really good dose of zinc vapor from welding can kill you. In low exposures, people get what is called "zinc fever" and it consists of flu-like symptoms for a day or so. Many people have gotten their lungs coated with the vaporized powder which causes severe inflammation -and is very often fatal.

When zinc is heated in the presence of oxygen, it will burn with a white flame and a fluffy white powder will curl upward. The powder is zinc oxide, which if inhaled, causes the zinc fever. Zinc begins to convert to zinc oxide in the presence4 of air at 450ºC and will auto ignite between 460ºC and 680ºC. Zinc vaporizes at 908ºC. All references to zinc fever or metal fume fever specifically refer to zinc oxide.
