I have 3 low-carbon steel discs, 6" diameter, 1/2" thick, I need to tap M10-1.5 holes through the centers.
Having only a 4" vise on my drill press, I pondered my predicament .
While not a perfect solution, I removed the arms from a couple of my Noga magnetic bases, placed them upside down in opposite directions in the vise, and used that arrangement to hold the discs while I drilled and tapped them. I used the jog feature of the DP to get the taps started, once I released the tap from the collet and went manual, the magnets were not strong enough to prevent the discs from spinning, but that's OK, the taps were started straight and easily finished in the bench vise.
Hopefully worth sharing with others facing a similar head scratching moment .
